Sand and dirt are two of the biggest enemies of your golf cart's bearings and seals. If this stuff is allowed to penetrate places it's not supposed to be, the result could be catastrophic. Bearings alone are sealed in most cases to protect against this. There are cases where heat from friction can cause those seals to open up and form gaps that basically send out longhand invitations to the bearing destruction party.
