A nice set of golf cart tires aren’t just for looks — different types can help you cover different terrains and open up lanes you never thought possible. When it’s time to change out the stock tires for something more adventurous, you need to know how to replace them properly.
Luckily, it’s pretty easy to change a golf cart tire at home. If it saves you time and a headache at the shop, we recommend replacing your golf cart tires yourself. First things first — you have to get the rubber off the road.
How to jack up a golf cart
The most important step is to consult your owner’s manual before attempting to make any modifications to your cart. Replacing the tires on a golf cart isn’t the same process for every model. E-Z-GO, Yamaha, or Club Car — it doesn’t matter what make, year, or model; jacking up every golf cart is different.
You can use a car jack or one especially designed for golf carts. With the right equipment, it's easy to lift your golf cart to replace the tires, saving a lot of sweat in the long term.
- Put the cart in park with the engine off on a level surface.
- Chock the wheels that will remain on the ground – if you are changing the front wheels, chock the back wheels, and vice versa.
- Line up your jack with the appropriate, stable piece of the cart’s frame. On most vehicles the jack points are near the wheels, but on a golf cart, they are typically under the frame rail of the golf cart, either in the front or the rear end of the vehicle.
- Using the lever or crank available on your jack, lift the cart so the tire you are replacing is fully off of the ground, and just a little higher than your jack stand.
- A jack stand will hold your cart in place while you work on it. Adjust the jack stand to the proper height, and slide it quickly and carefully into place at an appropriate jack point.
- When the jack stand is in place, lower the jack height until the vehicle rests on the jack stand. Once you’re sure the vehicle is stable and situated, you can start replacing the golf cart tires, repeating this process, one tire at a time.
- Once you’re finished with each wheel, raise the jack enough to remove the jack stand, then use the jack’s release to slowly and safely lower the cart back to the ground.
How hard is it to replace the tires on a golf cart?
Replacing a tire on a custom wheel isn’t easy, and is best left to the professionals. It’s much easier to purchase a pre-mounted tire and wheel assembly, and if you want to replace just your tires, you may be better off leaving that to a professional.
Choosing the right golf cart replacement tires
Regular maintenance to your golf cart’s engine and throttle plate is crucial, but the buildup of carbon on the engine is as well. Although less likely to be an issue, this carbon buildup can seriously impact engine performance over time and cause backfiring. The best way to prevent this build up is by keeping up with regular maintenance.
No more noise when accelerating
There’s no one perfect tire for every rider. Some prefer to stay on the links — others take their golf carts to the streets. If you plan to take your cart off roading, you’re definitely going to need good, grippy, high-quality replacement tires.
